Committed to SustainabilityCaring for our planet today, sharing a better world tomorrow.

Water. It’s the most valuable natural resource in the world. It shapes nature and, when used efficiently, it can shape a greener future. Preserving our fresh water supply and reducing our energy needs protects the lives of living things around the world, which is why Sloan is on a mission to develop energy and water-efficient solutions that will help our customers realize their sustainability goals.

Sloan’s Commitment

By offering energy and water-efficient products we hope to further the expansion of green building and renewable energy practices, reduce waste and pollution, and improve the quality of life for everyone. As the leading manufacturer of water-efficient plumbing systems, Sloan is committed to using our resources and innovative product line to help our customers achieve water savings, maintain performance expectations and reduce costs. Since our very first flushometer hit the market in 1906, we’ve been delivering on this commitment to eco-minded innovation, water conservation and lessening our communal carbon-footprint. As our commitment continues to grow, it has led to green initiatives that include cleaner production processes, sustainable energy sources and company wellness policies.

How We Do It

A commitment to green building starts with the production of materials. Knowing this, Sloan has taken steps toward sustainability that began with the production of brass components. Using a well-developed and extensive recycling process we have lessened the impact our foundries have on their local environments.

  • Currently, all our flushometers are made from approximately 80 percent semi-red brass cast alloy, 99 percent of which is from recycled sources.
  • This alloy consists of 45 percent post consumer material, 53 percent secondary material and 1 percent virgin material.

In addition, Sloan has earned Cradle-to-Cradle certification for two of our most popular products and counting. This certification measures achievement in environmentally intelligent design that maximizes efficiency and eliminates waste.

  • UPPERCUT® Flushometer: Cradle-to-Cradle Certified Silver Sloan’s new dual-flush UPPERCUT® flushometer is the first commercial flushometer to reduce water volume by approximately 30 percent.
  • Royal® 111 Flushometer: Cradle-to-Cradle Certified Silver Sloan has worked to improve the water efficiency of its flush valves, like this quiet, diaphragm type flush valve.

Since 2007, Sloan has purchased 20,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of Renewable Energy Credits, enough to offset 100 percent of the electricity used in our 450,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Franklin Park, Illinois. These credits, known as REC’s, certify that electricity comes from a renewable resource, such as wind power.

  • This purchase helped the company avoid generating more than 27 million pounds of carbon dioxide pollution that would have been created by the traditional production of electrical power. This is the approximate equivalent of taking more than 2,400 cars off the road or planting more than 3,700 acres of trees.
  • This is the largest renewable energy purchase in the plumbing industry, making Sloan the first flush valve manufacturer to purchase renewable energy credits to offset its electricity use.
  • This purchase is also the largest corporate purchase of renewable energy in the state of Illinois.

“Sloan Valve Company is a leader in the sustainability movement and that involves caring about our communities and respecting our environment. This purchase of renewable energy credits is a natural extension of that leadership and is integral to our core values.”

—Jim Allen, President and CEO

Looking Ahead

As we look toward the future our plan is quite simple – continue to pursue and implement eco-friendly technologies at our company while we strive to create better, water-saving products. And even though we lead the industry in using sustainable practices, we know there’s always room for more innovation. Our current long-term goals include:

  • Help support the development sustainable technologies like solar and wind power, which can limit or eliminate harmful energy practices in any industry
  • Implement cost saving technologies in all of our facilities after testing their value at our Franklin Park, IL office
  • Utilize ‘Green Team’ to help develop internal best practices between our international offices
  • Continue our work towards becoming an energy self-sufficient company
