  1. Q: How much water can be saved with Sloan’s Waterfree Urinals?

A: According to a research study evaluating Los Angeles’ water supply by Dr. William S. Comanor, Ph.D., Professor of Economics, University of California, Santa Barbara, "The amount of water that could be saved by adopting the new [waterfree] technology could easily approach three-quarters of a billion to a billion gallons annually."

The replaceable and biodegradable, liquid-sealed cartridge filters waste so liquids enter the drain and sediments are collected for disposal when the cartridge is replaced after 6,000 to 7,000 uses.  Multiplying each use by 1.6 gallons of water (to compare to low-flow toilets) or by 3.5 (to compare to older units) shows a savings of 9,600 to 24,500 gallons of water per cartridge.

  3. Q: Is odor a problem with Waterfree Urinals?

A: No.  In fact, Dr. Michael Hoffman, Ph.D., Dean of Graduate School, California Institute of Technology, says the design of the cartridge indicated there should be less odor.  “The dual barrier systems provided in the Waterfree Urinals are predicted to be 500 times more effective against the back migration of sewer gases as compared to conventional P-trap water barriers."

  5. Q: Is it true Sloan’s Waterfree Urinals are more sanitary than flush models?

A: Yes.  According to Dr. Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D., Professor of Environmental Microbiology, University of Arizona “Flush type urinals are far more likely to be colonized by bacteria because of the greater presence of moisture, to serve as reservoirs of diseases causing microorganisms, and to cause the widespread dissemination of microorganisms in a restroom because of the generation of aerosols during flushing."

  7. Q: What about cost of Sloan’s Waterfree Urinals?

A: “Because there is no need to install water supply pipes or flush valves, the initial cost for Waterfree Urinals is significantly less than flush models,” according to Gus Gosselin, Director of Michigan State University’s Physical Plant Division's Building Services Department.

  9. Q: What about cost for retrofits?

A: Waterfree Urinals connect easily to existing 2-inch drain lines so there is no extra cost for retrofits.  And because Waterfree Urinals provide a 100 percent reduction in water use and sewage cost, Dr. Birgitte K. Ahring, Ph.D., Professor of Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California Los Angeles, says, “Replacement of a standard water-flushing urinal with the waterfree urinal by Falcon Waterfree would yield a competitive rate of return."

  11. Q: How will Sloan’s Waterfree Urinals look in my restroom?

A: Sloan’s Waterfree Urinals provide the contemporary style and good looks to complement any restroom design.

  13. Q: Do Sloan’s Waterfree Urinals require special maintenance?

A: Sloan Waterfree Urinals can help reduce maintenance costs and workloads.  Harsh chemical cleaners become unnecessary.  Daily or as needed cleaning of the Waterfree Urinal is the same as standard urinals.  Clean up is simple using any standard mildly acidic cleaner (see cleaner recommendations) and a quick wipe.  No rim holes or mineral deposits to worry about, just a smooth dry surface.  Conventional urinals with wet surfaces can be become a breeding ground for bacterial growth and odors.

  15. Q: Are special cleaning agents required?

A: Any all-purpose disinfectant/cleaning agent can be used for touch-up daily cleaning or as needed.
